About the event
The 305-acre Helmenstine farm has been in the family since 1897, when Jerome’s great-grandfather homesteaded the property. For the past 17 years, sections of savanna and woodland here have been undergoing restoration. Some areas are in the CREP, CRP and CCP set- aside programs for native grasses and pollinator mixes. The farm has a mix of upland and lowland grasslands, cultivated fields and wooded hill slopes. It includes a parcel adjacent to the East Branch of Blue Mounds Creek. The south-facing slopes have a number of impressive oaks. Inaddition, there is diverse wildlife, including American kestrels nesting in
breeding boxes.
